Heating
Heating systems consist of the following applications:
Electric heating system, Heat pump, Hydronic heat System, Steam heating System, Gas Furnace Heating System.
While most heating systems, such as electric, heat pump, hydronic, and gas furnace heating systems, are suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial use, steam heating systems are solely for industrial applications. Not only are steam heating systems expensive, but they are also unsafe for residential use.
On the other hand, electric heating systems are commonly used in residential and commercial settings. This heating system consists mainly of strips of electric heating elements and an air circulating fan. When heat is requested, the fan is energized, and then the heating elements are activated. The fan pulls air from the conditioned space across the heating elements and returns it to the space. As the temperature in the space warms up, the thermostat signals the system to maintain the desired temperature by cycling on and off.
Heat Pump: A Heat Pump is a mechanical heating system that can be used as an air-conditioning system as well. The device that converts the air-conditioning system into a heating system is called a reversing valve. When the valve is energized, the refrigerant flow direction changes from the compressor discharge outlet to the evaporator, then back to the condenser and to the compressor again. The refrigerant circulates through the evaporator coil, and heat is transferred from the space air that circulates between the evaporator and space. This process continues until the space temperature is achieved, and the unit then cycles.
Hydronic Heating System:
A Hydronic Heating System is commonly used in commercial and industrial applications but can also be used in residential properties. This system is a hot water circulating unit that includes a Boiler, a hot water circulating pump, and an Air Handler or fan coil unit. The Boiler heats the water to the required temperature while the circulating pump operates. The pump circulates hot water between the Boiler and Air Handler or Fan Coil Unit, exchanging heat from the circulating hot water to the circulating space air. The hot water pump runs continuously during heating operation, but the Boiler will cycle as the space temperature is achieved.
Gas Furnace Heating System:
A Gas Furnace Heating System is commonly used for residential and commercial heating. This system consists of a heat exchanger, an inducer fan, a gas valve, gas burners, a fan, and a fan motor. The gas furnace unit uses the same heat exchanging process as the other systems described above. Upon request for heat, the furnace inducer fan is energized. When the fan is proved by a pressure switch, the igniter is energized. After the igniter is proved, the gas valve is energized, and the burner is ignited, starting to heat the heat exchanger. At a preset temperature, a thermal switch energizes the furnace circulating fan motor, and the heat exchanging process begins, introducing heat to the space. This process continues until the preset space temperature is reached.
